- wedding reception, party of 30
I held my small wedding reception at Cathédrale in The Patio (30 guests), and overall it was such a special night. The Patio is a beautiful enclosed space—intimate, elegant, and perfect for a private event. I would absolutely love to come back for a summer celebration when it’s warmer and the space is open. Unfortunately, the heaters weren’t turned on during our event and it was very cold. Most of my guests had to keep their coats on. We requested multiple times for the heaters to be turned on and were told someone would handle it, but it never happened, which was disappointing. That said, the planning process was wonderful. Working with Andrea and then Genna was seamless from start to finish. They scheduled tours of the spaces with me, walked me through the event packages, and helped curate an intimate evening with great food and drinks. They made the process feel easy and exciting. Massiel, one of the managers, was communicative and kind leading up to the event. I dropped off custom menus (even though they provide beautiful printed menus for events), favors, and décor the night before, and her team truly outdid themselves with the setup. She also helped us get our music connected without any stress. The staff overall was amazing. Every hostess I encountered was warm and welcoming. The wait staff was incredible and handled our family-style meal beautifully. Toward the end of the night, as the restaurant got busier, drink service slowed down a bit—but the team did their best to remain responsive and attentive. Meal highlights: the bread (so good!), salade verte, filet mignon, branzino, and sautéed spinach. The chef and team delivered excellent food across the board. The premium bar package and macaron tower were absolutely worth it. The champagne tower was a lovely visual touch, but I was under the impression (based on how it was presented on the event menu) that we would be able to pour into it during a toast. I was told it was unsteady so it ended up being mostly decorative, and I probably wouldn’t include it again. Liam was our main host that evening. While he helped accommodate our requests and kept the night running smoothly, he could have been a bit warmer—some of my guests didn’t love his customer service. He also repeatedly called my husband Rob instead of Rod, which was frustrating on our wedding night. Because of this, I ended up doing most of the speaking with him instead of my husband to avoid confusion. Overall, despite a few hiccups, we had a beautiful and memorable evening with great food, a stunning space, and a team that truly helped bring our vision to life. - restaurant week dinner, party of 9
Note: Rating is for Restaurant Week solely. 6/5 service if I could. I was at this restaurant with a group of 8 others a couple of evenings ago for Restaurant Week, with theirs being listed as a $60 Summer Bistro, being a little bit more elaborate than the typical spot with wine specials and otherwise. The large space is gorgeous, though a tad too loud and a tiny bit dark for photos. The service was excellent, going above and beyond the typical spot, making our evening special and more than making up for some issues throughout the night. A lot of people were there early, so a bunch went to the bar to hang out while waiting for happy hour drinks. I personally had a glass of Blanc de Blancs, a French sparkling wine from Grandial. It's usually overpriced at $16 a glass, but for $8 during HH, I didn't mind. We were soon seated at a slightly cramped booth, and they gave us some time to think. Prior to ordering, they brought over some Grissini, or breadsticks, along with some olives to munch on. Two of us decided to split the reasonably priced $25 15oz carafe of Domaine Bernard Defaix Bourgogne Blanc, with others getting the other reds. Post-ordering, they also brought us some Parker House rolls with a sesame herbed whipped butter. The bread was warm, and the butter had a very nice texture, but lacked some flavor, with one of us joking around that it was more like whipped margarine. My appetizer was the Leeks (or Poireaux) Vinaigrette. The presentation was more artful than the typical spot, with larger leeks arranged vertically and covered with some vinegared mushrooms, walnuts, and a bit of salad. The others enjoyed their apps, but one person's escargot was very late. The staff apologized, with them providing her a mocktail on the house, which was appreciated. For my main, I went with the Duck Confit. The portion size was decent, with the best part of the dish being the fondant potatoes, as they were tender and juicy, with some richness from the duck. The duck itself was flavorful and meaty, though missing the crispy skin. The sauce was decent, with a mild sourness, and a couple pieces of sour cherry with the chard adding a touch of bitterness. If the duck had properly crispy skin, it would have been outstanding, but the dish was still good. In terms of other entrees, the chicken apparently was very salty, with another person trying and saying the same thing. The staff apologized and brought out a new version of the dish. I tried a bit of the shoestring post-replacement, and they were fine, though they could have, ironically, used a bit more salt. Along with the mains, they brought out some complimentary sides of the Macaroni Gratin Jambon and Wild Mushrooms. The wild mushrooms were tender and lightly roasted, while the more unique dish was the gratin. Instead of being multiple small pieces of pasta, it was instead one giant maccherone, with us cutting the dish at the table. The flavor was rich and slightly salty, with the ham adding more texture. My dessert was the disappointing Strawberry Tarte Tropézienne. The tart wasn't the best, being a tad dry and missing the characteristic pearl sugar on top, though the cream was decent. I also wished that the strawberries were more incorporated, as they were just on the side. Others enjoyed the various other desserts, with the Milk Chocolate Soufflé being raved. Possibly due to the entree issues, or as they were being friendly, as we had ordered a lot of food and wine, they also brought out a free platter of their Fruttini. The flavors included blood orange, lemon, strawberry, and kiwi. I tried a bit of the blood orange, which was very tasty, along with the strawberry, which was excellent. We soon left after paying, with there being caramel popsicles on the table. I am not usually the biggest fan of Tao Group restaurants, as they don't fit into my usual style, being more substance rather than flavor. This was a tasty exception, at least for Restaurant Week.
- group birthday dinner, party of 9
I recently dined at Cathedral NYC with a group, and unfortunately, our experience was disappointing from the start. Our reservation was at 7:30 PM, and we didn’t leave until 11:30 PM — a four-hour ordeal that felt unnecessarily long given the level of service. When we arrived, we let the host know that our reservation had changed from 10 to 9 guests, but we were seated at a table for 8 — and at one of the least desirable tables in the restaurant. The setup was cramped, right in a high-traffic area where we were constantly being bumped into by both patrons and staff. Our server, Caroline, seemed unsure of how to handle the situation. We spoke to multiple people trying to get the table sorted out and eventually ended up bringing over our own chair and place setting. The table was also very wobbly, but we didn’t even ask for it to be fixed because, by that point, our expectations were low. Throughout the meal, the service felt unorganized and inconsistent. We asked for tap water, but instead they brought bottled water — and then kept mixing the two throughout the night. When ordering drinks, Caroline didn’t seem familiar with the menu; when we asked for a Brut rosé, she seemed confused and offered Veuve instead. After clarifying and specifically asking for the Crémant, we still received a still rosé. The unused wine glasses were never cleared — one of us even ended up helping her clear them. She appeared distracted, serving between multiple tables and not following proper steps of service. We also couldn’t help but feel that the way we were treated was race-motivated. We were an all-Black group, and tables seated well after us were already finishing their meals and leaving by the time we were just ordering our entrées. The lack of attentiveness and delay in service felt noticeably different from what we observed around us. At the end of the night, a manager brought complimentary espresso martini shots, but spilled them all over the birthday guest — adding to an already frustrating experience. They did take off 50% of the bill, but honestly, the only reason the server received any tip at all was because we all work in hospitality. There was never a sincere apology or acknowledgment for the multiple service issues throughout the evening. Our entire table works in hospitality, so we were particularly surprised by the lack of awareness, care, and professionalism. Overall, Cathedral has a beautiful space and lively atmosphere, but the service experience fell far short. We hope this feedback helps the team reflect and make meaningful improvements to ensure that all guests feel valued, respected, and safe.
- corporate vip event
I attended a VIP Tech event (company named VON) in the inner VIP room, and it was perfect! Great job!
- birthday party
It honestly pains me to write this, because my best friend’s birthday celebration should have been a night of joy — instead, it was a complete disaster from start to finish. We made reservations 45 days in advance (yes, a month and a half!) only to show up on time and still wait 35 minutes past our reservation for a table. We arrived hungry, excited, and ready to celebrate, but instead we were left standing around because the restaurant simply wasn’t prepared for us. When we finally sat down, things only got worse. Our drinks didn’t arrive for 45 minutes. The waiter asked about allergies — we specifically told him one guest had a severe nut allergy — and yet the very first thing brought to the table was butter topped with nuts. That’s not just careless, that’s dangerous. Dinner dragged on painfully slow, taking over an hour and 15 minutes after ordering. By the time dessert rolled around, another 30-minute wait killed whatever celebration mood we had left. We were there for a total of 3 hours. The saddest part? Three of my best friends left early before dessert — at the birthday dinner. Imagine the guest of honor sitting there with people trickling out of his own celebration. When asked to speak with a manager everyone always said “I am the Manager”. I spoke with three different people who claimed they were the manager. The whole experience screamed “understaffed, unorganized, and overwhelmed.” What’s the point of booking a birthday dinner more than a month in advance if the restaurant can’t deliver even the basics — timely seating, drinks, food, and allergy safety? This wasn’t just disappointing, it was embarrassing. This night will unfortunately go down as one of my friend’s worst birthdays. Maybe someday we’ll laugh about it, but right now all I feel is frustration. If you’re thinking of bringing a big party here to celebrate something important, do yourself a favor and pick literally anywhere else. Good luck if you
