  If you’ve read any of my other reviews, you’ll quickly realize I’m a massive fan of Keith McNally. Like many creative geniuses, he has his quirks and occasionally posts inflammatory things on social media, likely amplified after some serious health challenges. That said, his contribution to New York dining is undeniable. He’s a true original. Minetta Tavern is an absolute McNally gem. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, Lucky Strike was my local for nearly a decade, and I worshipped it for its authenticity and neighborhood soul. Minetta feels like its more refined sibling, elevated but still grounded, and unmistakably McNally in all the right ways. Minetta reopened during my time in New York to widespread praise. I wasn’t around for its earlier incarnation and can’t speak to its original ownership or full history, but it’s clearly an iconic room that has anchored a busy stretch of MacDougal Street for decades. McNally’s revival, roughly within the past fifteen years, honored that legacy while sharpening it. The black-and-white tile floor, the low ceilings, and the compact dining room create a warmth and intimacy that immediately pulls you in. It shares the coziness that makes Balthazar special, but in a smaller, more intimate package. On a cold winter night or during the holidays, it’s close to perfect. In my single days, when I was a McNally regular with better reservation access, this was where I’d take women I was trying to impress or colleagues who wanted downtown energy, had generous budgets, and zero tolerance for mediocrity. Over time, it evolved into a favorite spot for boozy holiday lunches with coworkers and eventually became the anchor dinner for my bachelor party before a night out in Greenwich Village and SoHo. The service is outstanding, the noise level is lively without being overwhelming, and you genuinely feel like part of a supper club rather than just another table. While I don’t love the block it’s on anymore, it’s become touristy and a bit kitschy, stepping inside feels like being transported into an older New York enclave, overseen by a veteran restaurateur who understands both tradition and modern expectations. The staff is exceptional, the food consistently excellent, and the drinks strong. The signature Black Label Burger deserves its reputation. It’s a high-end Pat LaFrieda creation taken to its logical extreme and was one of the early catalysts for the now-global “fancy burger” movement. There’s also the classic Minetta burger at a lower price point, which is excellent in its own right and consistent with McNally's standards across his restaurants. I’m not a martini drinker, but friends whose palates I trust swear that Minetta’s martinis are among the best in the city. Bar seating is available, set formally with individual place settings and typically requiring a reservation. Expect seasoned, professional bartenders who know how to guide you through the meal without pretense. Minetta Tavern isn’t just a restaurant. It’s a New York institution that manages to feel timeless, intimate, and special, even decades into its story.

  Terrible service, passive aggressive staff, that will say and do wild things to turn over tables/seats quickly. Never felt so unwelcomed at an establishment. They accommodated our group of 6 at the bar, a few moments later what I assume is the maitre d' comes over and say “What you have going on is ‘cute’, but…” and then ask us to move to accommodate other guest. We are still half way with our drinks, and we get served the check by our bartender. A few moments after that another bartender comes in search of a missing bar stool, making us stand up until he finds the ‘missing stool’ he is looking for. We understand that one should not linger too long at an establishment, but were for context - they were in between service and all the dining tables were empty. Oh and there is a blizzard outside. Think twice about coming here, also, take time to read the one star reviews.

  I have been a customer since my 60th birthday. I am now 74. I live in Longboat Key Florida for the last 4 years. Minetta Tavern has been my and my family’s special place since celebrating my 60th as I only wanted the best burger and fries on the planet. I got it and so much more pleasure through the years. Recently my Swiss Cousin came to the States to see where his Father grew upon Brooklyn. My son, brother in law (who grew up on n the Brooklyn location of his uncle , my cousins father) would be his “tour guides”. We all thought that the dinner should be the quintessential New York experience consisting of the best Manhattan, ‘burger appetizer and of course the cote de boeuf. The experience of the deeply emotional “tour” of discovery of family roots culminating with dinner at Minetta was the experience of a lifetime and binding our families even more closely. My gratitude to you Mr. McNally and to your team that night with out even being aware of the importance of this family event transcends what a truly great restaurant can achieve on such a deeply personal level.   My family and I were so impressed with Minetta’s. We came for the food and history and left feeling like we just had one of the best nights in New York. Our waiter was spot-on excellent, quick, concerned, and at the ready for anything our group needed. Every dish was wonderful. I wish we could have stayed longer and had yet another course, but we split due to theater plans. This wasn’t our first trip to Minetta’s and won’t be our last.

  Went with a group of friends for a late night post-game. We each enjoyed a classic Minetta burger or a black label burger. All perfectly cooked and the meat quality was spectacular - juicy and full of flavor. The stars though were those darn fries which none of us expected to be that good and all crushed.
